As part of Bitcatcha’s mission, we offer our readers a close as possible experience with a web host before purchasing. So How Is HostGator Cloud Doing?
First, to evaluate the performance of a web host, we want to know how responsive their web server is. When we type a URL into the address bar, a browser will resolve the URL into an IP address and then outreach the IP address (aka the server). The browser then requests website resources like HTML code and pictures. All this usually happens within a few hundred milliseconds.
How quickly the web server responds to the requests is measured by server response time. By measuring server response time we can estimate the quality of the network and its efficiency as well as the datacenter hardware.
Using the Bitcatcha server response time checker, we sent in requests to HostGator Cloud from 8 different locations, mimicking 8 different people scattered around the world accessing this website. We measured how quickly we got a response from the HostGator Cloud server at each location.
Google recommends a server response time not more than 200ms. The screenshot below shows the results for HostGator Cloud.
This test was done on this-date. See the full report here. The performance rating given is based on the average of the results across 8 locations. With an average of 150ms server response time, HostGator Cloud is performing well above Google’s recommendation.
Secondly, we tracked the uptime of this website using the free monitoring tool, Uptime Robot. Because it is cloud hosting, this website should be up 100% of the time. Well, all sorts of things can happen, such as the tracker not working, the network going down, etc. So if we see 100% uptime, that’s great; otherwise we want to see at least 99.8% or above. 2. The red-circled data in GTMetrix is Time To First Byte. It is similar to server response time and it is showing 9 ms – It is much faster from the server response speed we tested on Bitcatcha.
3. Google PageSpeed Tool measures all the best practices this website is doing. It didn’t raise alarm about server response time.
4. GTMetrix, Pingdom, Google PageSpeed test the best practice and overall performance of this website. If you choose to host with HostGator Cloud, we don’t guarantee your website has the same the speed result. This is because in order to get to that point of performance, further frontend optimization is needed.

This ability to spread your data across locations also makes the cloud hosting plan more reliable in case of hardware problems. If one server goes down, it can still pull resources from the other servers in the pool and so won’t cause your website to go black.
